Cheerleaders and dance team- can we stop the rivalry?

Do you have someone that you argue with all the time? That's what it's like with the cheer team and the dance team.
A lot of times one team thinks they are superior to the other and the girls begin to mock each other's sports. My opinion is that cheerleaders and dancers argue a lot for no good reason. I am currently a member of the dance team and I see the rivalry between the two groups all the time.

People on both teams feel the same way I do. A member of the 7th grade cheer team, who would rather remain anonymous, agrees that the teams do fight a lot. She says, "The dance team does make fun of us (the cheer team) by doing things like 'cheer splits' and 'cheer kicks' as insults. Things like that annoy a lot of people on the team- but not me personally."

But why is there a rivalry at all? Why is there any reason for the two teams of girls to conflict? A 7th grade member of the dance team named Shannon H believes that, "The cheerleaders and dancers are so similar that they are compelled to have something different. The only thing they can think of is having one team be better than the other."

I agree with Shannon, because from my experience, that's usually why we fight. When the girls "fight," they usually just make fun of each other about things like uniforms, ability, and all the usual stereotypes that are associated with the different groups. This can go down anytime and anywhere. Word moves fast in this school and when someone on one team talks bad about the other, people's feelings can get hurt.

So, if you are a member of one of these teams, I would like to ask you now to stop the mocking. Girls like Shannon should not be subjected to such behavior. If we can all just get along and be friends, then we will have a ton more fun doing the extra curricular activities that we love.
