The truth about diabetes

Do you know what diabetes is?  Many people in the world have no idea.

There are two types of diabetes. Type one has a hereditary tendency.  The disease can be passed down in families that have a history of diabetes.  Type two is a disease caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.  This type of diabetes can be prevented by eating healthy and exercising regularly.

Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body can't use glucose normally.  This is a problem, because glucose is the main source of energy for the body's cells.  This causes people with untreated diabetes to have less energy than others.  Scott R, 8th grader with diabetes, says, “I was always tired, thirsty, and had to use the bathroom constantly.  I also lost a lot of weight, down to seventy pounds when I was twelve and supposed to be growing a lot.”

Insulin is medicine that helps glucose enter the cells.  Diabetics have the issue of not creating enough insulin because their pancreas doesn't function correctly.  “Diabetic pancreases just suck!” said Scott. Therefore, all treated diabetic people give themselves a shot of insulin, or they have a pump that gives them insulin.

We wanted to find out how much the average student knew, so we interviewed a few kids from Mill Creek.  “You need insulation shots,” answered Derek W, 7th grade.  Many seventh graders agreed with this statement, or didn't know anything at all about diabetes.  Most students just gave us random answers.  “I like giving people with diabetes their insulin shots!” Haili B, 8th, exclaimed.  It is clear that children aren't educated on the terrible effects of diabetes on all people who have it.

Diabetes is a disease that can become very serious, sometimes deadly, and not many people know about it.
