Fry Soccer!
by JAMES F
January 1, 2010
Soccer has been a great love of Mr. Fry for all of his life, and he decided to get his students involved in his passion.  Eleven years ago Mr. Fry decided to start a soccer program here at Mill Creek.  “I wanted to create a place where you can play soccer with your friends, without a coach yelling at you,” says Mr. Fry.  “I started it, for fun!”

The idea of fun is much more important that competitiveness.  The team plays in a league at Wide World Sports Center.  They are usually with kids of their age, and it is not about winning, only about having fun.  Scott R, 8th grade, enjoys Fry soccer very much.  He has had no soccer experience before the program and still looks forward to it every week.  “We're all in the same submarine,” says Scott.  “We're all inexperienced soccer players just looking to have some fun.”  Mr. Fry usually does two sessions in the winter, and signing up is easy!  You will get a team shirt and soccer socks to get started.

Mr. Fry has a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University and a master's degree from Lawrence Technological University.  This is Mr. Fry's twelfth year teaching at Mill Creek Middle School.  I was in Mr. Fry's class last year and I can confirm that he is an extremely fun teacher and uses methods of teaching that most teachers don't.  This makes his coaching unique as well, creating a fun and good soccer experience.

The teams play once a week in the winter. There is one eighth grade team and two seventh grade teams.  The eighth and seventh grade teams play against each other and some other teams are thrown into the mix.  Some of the other teams are the Saline Sting and the Saline Buzz.  The indoor arena is an average indoor field in which you are allowed to play the ball off of the wall without it being called out.  There is no slide tackling allowed for safety reasons ensuring that this is a good environment to play fair soccer in.  There is a net around the field to catch soccer balls that are launched too high into the air.  This is so that there is no running to get the ball, which wastes time.  Time is precious because the clock never stops.

Mr. Fry's soccer program is an all around good way to play soccer in a safe, fun environment.  You don't need soccer experience because competitiveness is not as important as fun.  If you have ever been interested in playing soccer, are just looking for a fun place to hang out with your friends, or, if you are good at soccer, want to practice your moves, Mr. Fry's soccer program would be a good place to go!
