On December 11, 2009, Alabama running back Mark Ingram won Alabama their first Heisman, the most prestigious award in college football.  The ceremony was held in Manhattan New York.  Ingram beat out Stanford running back Toby Gerhart by a margin of 28 points, the smallest in the history of the award.  Texas quarterback (QB) Colt McCoy came in third, followed by Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.  Tim Tebow, who won the Heisman two years ago, came in fifth and was also nominated last year with third place Colt McCoy, and Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, who was injured this year.

The Heisman award is traditionally given to the most outstanding player in all of college football.  According to the judges, Ingram accomplished that.  With his dynamic combination of power and acceleration, he was a defense's worst nightmare.  “Mark Ingram is Da Bomb!” said 8th grader Ben G.  “No one can stop him.”  He totaled on the season 1,658 rushing yards, and fifteen rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns.

Ingram is the third sophomore in a row to win the award.  8th grader Justin S said, “Mark Ingram won the Heisman.”  Good analysis.  Anyway, in 2007, Florida QB Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to ever win the Heisman.  Then in 2008, Alabama QB Sam Bradford became the second.  Ingram is also a strong candidate to win the Heisman again, as all of the previous candidates will be entering the NFL draft.

On January 7, Mark Ingram's team the Alabama Crimson Tide won the BCS National Championship over the Texas Longhorns by a score of 37-21.  Ingram led his team to victory with a total of 116 rushing yards and 2 rushing TDs. Ingram is one of five to win the Heisman and the championship in the same season, an accomplishment that many college football greats have failed to do.  The most recent player to do this was Texas QB Vince Young in 2006.

Ingram became emotional during his Heisman speech, because his motivation was his father, Mark Ingram Sr., who was a former star for the New York Giants.  But recently he had some problems with the law.  He was supposed to be brought to jail, but he resisted until he saw his son win the award.   Ingram Sr. also watched the national championship from prison, and I think it's safe to say that he is very proud of his son.
