Killer whale attacks trainer
by KYLE K
March 24, 2010
On February, 24 2010, Sea World's trainer Dawn Brancheau died after being attacked by a killer whale named Tilikum.  Tilikum bit Dawn's pony tail and pulled her into the water.

Dawn tried to get away, but Tilikum had bitten her stomach too. Her blood filled the clear water of the pool.  Finally Tilikum had let go of her body, but as she was swimming away he bit her again and pulled her down underwater for about a minute and that's when she died.  He sat at the bottom of the pool with her body in his mouth.

This happened in front of a live audience. People watched helplessly off to the side. This was the third person that Tilikum has killed.  In 1991 he and two other killer whales drowned a trainer during a performance at Sea Land in Vancouver.  In 1999, a man who trespassed in Sea World after hours  apparently jumped into the whale tank and was found dead the next morning on Tilikum's back.

There are some people who thinks it's wrong to keep whales in a tank. 8th grader Kayla J. said her opinion, “No,whales are meant to be in the ocean.”

Scientists think that Dawn Brancheau's ponytail may have caused the attack.  Tilikum is a 12,000-lb killer whale.  The people at Sea World have decided to keep Tilikum alive after his third killing. 8th grader Jake Copland said, “They should kill the whale.”

Animal advocates called on Sea World to end shows that require dolphins and whales because they are smart animals that have strong feelings.
