MAMSE conference comes to Mill Creek
by VON H
March 24, 2010
On Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5, the Mill Creek junior advisors (JAs) were teaching middle school teachers from around the state at the MAMSE conference.  The JA’s were teaching helpful teaching skills and techniques.  “We are teaching them about things we do to teach students, like breaking the “ice” or starting a conversation,” said Cameron L., JA and 8th grader.  The conference was because Mill Creek is a National School to Watch, one of six in Michigan.  Also we have the Principal of the Year 2009-2010, Ms. Bronson!

The JAs were teaching on and off. While one or two JAs were teaching, the others would be off being interviewed by some other teachers or doing something else. "Before presenters like me and other teachers presented, the JAs came into the room and introduced the presenters," Mrs. Berryman, 7th grade teacher and JA advisor, said.

The MAMSE conference is thinking about going nationwide, which for Mill Creek is awesome because when the conference goes nationwide we could have the honor to host it again and have a chance to meet new people.

“I think that the MAMSE conference was awesome because our school was honored to have the conference here. Also we missed school. That’s the important part,” said Erick L., 7th grader.

“There were a little over 400 registered visitors,” Mrs. Berryman said. “The JAs spoke twice, once on Thursday and once on Friday.  On the JAs last presentation was when they had the biggest crowd and got applause after.  The visitors said things like the JAs were very friendly, they did a great job speaking on behalf of our school.  We got tons of compliments over and over.”

At lunch the JA’s danced.  Nick At Nite, the DJ, was performing.  Some visitors got up and danced with the JAs. "Some guests said it made lunch fun and enjoyable.” said Mrs. Berryman.

At the awards ceremony at 10:10 a.m. on Friday, Morgan Van Hoof received an award.  After the DJ played the song "Hey Baby," which the JAs have a dance to, so they got up and danced to the song, according to Mrs. Berryman.
