Michael Oher, six foot four, 309 pounds, right tackle, number 74 for the Baltimore Ravens. He was a first round draft pick by the Ravens in early 2009. This is his prime time. Some of this you might know, but what you might not know about is his childhood.

Oher was born on May 28th 1986, in a family of twelve children. His mother, Denise Oher, was addicted to crack cocaine since he was born. This problem of his mother's gave him almost no attention as a young child. He had to repeat both first and second grade, and had to attend eleven different schools before he reached high school. He alternated between different foster homes and also spent some of his time homeless. After his freshmen year at a public school in Memphis, Oher applied for a private school, Briarcrest Christian School. Oher was simply just going with Tony Henderson and Tony’s son that was applying to this school. He applied just to apply, and got in even though he  struggled substantially with academics.

Oher lived with several different families while going to Briarcrest for around one and a half years. He was picked up by a family of four, Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, a couple with two children, and became a foster child of theirs. They hired a tutor to help him get the grades he needed to play college football. Cassie K, 8th, says, “If I were Michael Oher in this situation I wouldn’t want to finish school.” Oher struggled with other people during the beginning of his high school years. Oher finished high school with all A’s and B’s.

Oher went to the University of Mississippi, to play football. Oher started for the first ten games as guard on his freshmen year, and became first team freshman All American. In 2006 Oher switched from guard to left tackle and was very successful. He was also keeping up academically in college. On January 14 2008, Michael announced that he would enter into the NFL draft. Two days later he re-announced he would return to Mississippi to finish his senior year. Scott R, 8th, announced, “His choice to go back to school before entering the NFL shows his maturity.” After finishing his senior year he re-entered the NFL draft for 2009.

Michael Oher had a book and a movie made after his life. The Blind Side it was called. The book was made in 2006, by Michael Lewis. In 2009 this book was adopted into a movie, staring Quinton Aaron as Michael Oher, Sandra Bullock, and Tim McGraw. The movie was directed by John Lee Hancock. The movie was a smash hit as it debuted on November 20th. Michael Oher has still not seen the movie or read the book.

Michael Oher is one of the many people that grew up with a tough childhood, but he is in a small selection when you hear about people that had a tough childhood because he rose above what he was expected and became great.
