The best book series you'll ever read

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare is an awesome new series. The series is a mix of Twilight and Harry Potter, but it's neither better nor worse than those two equally fabulous series. The Mortal Instruments has caught the attention of avid readers everywhere.

The Mortal Instruments is currently a trilogy: City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass. City of Bones is about a fifteen-year old girl named Clary Fray, whose search for her missing mother leads her into an alternate New York called Downworld, filled with mysterious faeries, warlocks, vampires, an army of werewolves, and the demons who want to destroy it all. She also finds herself torn between two boys — her best friend, Simon, for whom she’s developing new feelings, and the mysterious demon hunter, Jace. She becomes a part of the secret world of the demon hunters, and as she does, she discovers that rescuing her mother might mean putting their whole world in jeopardy. The rest of the series focuses on her adventures as a Shadow hunter and trying to save her mother. This series is definitely worth reading.

Teachers and students alike have read one or all of the books in the series. Morgan V, 8th, says, "I loved every book in the series. . . they were all really interesting and it was hard for me to put the book down because I always wanted to find out what happens next."

"I loved the books! I really like urban fantasy in general, and these (the series) were some of my favorites! I really liked it, because it reminded me of one of my favorite TV shows in high school, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It also has a great mix of nonstop action and romance, which I think most people like to read about," Lauren Straub, Mill Creek Middle School librarian, comments.

Not many people who have read the series would want to change anything about the books, either.  "There's not much -or anything- I would change, but I guess I would change the way Clary fights about her feelings for Jace. . . this series is definitely my favorite! I can't wait for the next book!" Morgan adds.

"There is absolutely nothing I would want to change (about the books)!" Straub says.

Even authors of other popular books have praised Clare's series.  Stephanie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, shares, "The Mortal Instruments series is a story world that I love to live in. Beautiful!"

Clare has made a good name for herself writing this series. The first book, City of Bones, reached number 8 on the New York Times bestseller list on April 2007. The second book in the series, City of Ashes, was nominated for the 2009 ALA Teen's Top Ten, a vote for the best ten teen books of the year. The series has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for 9 weeks as of June 1, 2009. The fourth book in the series, City of Fallen Angels, is set to be released on March 11, 2011.

Clare has been asked many times where her inspiration for the series came from. This is her response, posted on her website:  "When I sat down to sketch out the book, I wanted to write something that would combine elements of traditional high fantasy — an epic battle between good and evil, terrible monsters, brave heroes, enchanted swords — and recast it through a modern, urban lens. So you have the Shadowhunters, who are these very classic warriors following their millennia-old traditions, but in these urban, modern spaces: skyscrapers, warehouses, abandoned hotels, rock concerts. In fairy tales, it was the dark and mysterious forest outside the town that held the magic and danger. I wanted to create a world where the city has become the forest — where these urban spaces hold their own enchantments, danger, mysteries and strange beauty. It’s just that only the Shadowhunters can see them as they really are."

A movie has not been publicly announced, but Clare has sold film rights to Unique Features.

"The film rights to The Mortal Instruments have been optioned by Unique Features. This is a film production company set up by former founders and co-presidents of New Line Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, who oversaw the production of the Lord of the Rings movies — probably my favorite fantasy movies of all time. They’re very dedicated to fantasy and they understand it, and I definitely trust them with The Mortal Instruments books," Clare shared.

I think this series will appeal to most teenagers and adults, because it has a balanced mix of action and romance. The Mortal Instruments series has always been highly praised for the mix of themes Clare used.  I think most teenagers can find something to relate to in the books, so that may also be why it is so popular among teens. The Mortal Instruments is one of the best series I've ever read. I have read a lot of books, so that's a high praise. Every book captivates and leaves me waiting for more. Clare has done an excellent job with her first series, and I hope she'll continue writing in the future. You should definitely read all -or at least one- of the fabulous books in The Mortal Instruments trilogy. If you've read and enjoyed the Twilight and Harry Potter series, then I recommend The Mortal Instruments books. You will surely fall in love with the characters and fantasy plot.
