The second movie in the famed Twilight saga will be released worldwide on November 20 of this year. The movie is directed by Chris Weitz, and based on the novel, New Moon, by Stephanie Meyer.

SPOILER ALERT!
The book centers around Bella Swan after her vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen, leaves her because he thinks she will be safer without him. Heartbroken and deeply depressed, Bella looks to her best friend, Jacob Black, to comfort her. Bella discovers that Edward's image comes to her whenever she puts her life in jeopardy, which leads her to take greater and greater risks, with Jacob introducing her to new activities to distract her from her sorrow. However, after an event that changes Jacob's life, he also believes Bella will be safer without him. Heartbroken yet again, Bella returns to her home that night, and finds Edward's adopted sister, Alice, there. She tells Bella that Edward is going to attempt to kill himself because he believes that Bella is dead. It then becomes a race against the clock as Bella and Alice try to find Edward to show him that Bella is, indeed, alive.

Stephanie Meyer is the author of the Twilight series, and had never written before she wrote Twilight. She lives in Arizona with her husband and three sons.

Christopher John Weitz is an Academy Award nominated producer, writer and director. He is best known for his work with his brother, Paul Weitz, on the comedy films American Pie and About a Boy, as well as directing the film adaptation of the novel The Golden Compass. He is currently directing the film adaptation of New Moon from the series of Twilight books.

In early November 2008, Summit announced that they had obtained the rights to the remaining books in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series: New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. On November 22, 2008, one day after the theatrical release of Twilight, Summit confirmed that they would begin working on New Moon. Melissa Rosenberg had been working on adapting the novel prior to Twilight's release and handed in the draft for New Moon during Twilight's opening weekend in November 2008. In early December 2008, it was announced that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke would not be returning to direct the sequel. On December 13, 2008, it was announced that Chris Weitz had been hired to direct New Moon.

"I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment," said Meyer.

New Moon is highly anticipated around the world. The first book adaptation, Twilight, grossed over $7 million in ticket sales from midnight showings alone on November 21, 2008. The film is fourth overall on online ticket service lists of top advance ticket sales. It grossed $35.7 million on its opening day. As of April 23, 2009, the film has made $191,465,414 in the United States and Canada, and a further $188,447,533 in international territories for a total of $379,912,947 worldwide. New Moon is expected to be even more of a success.

"I think New Moon will be better than Twilight. They have learned from the first film, and they also have a new director. I can't wait to see how they've improved (since Twilight)," Morgan V, 8th, comments.

The cast of Twilight also received five out of seven of the MTV Movie Awards, including Best Film, Best Female Actress (awarded to Kristen Sewart), and Best Breakthrough Male (awarded to Robert Pattinson).

"We did well," Micheal Welch, who plays Mike Newtown in the film, said. “We won five out of seven, and we're all happy to have been in Twilight (which won Best Film) together. We're all able to share our success."

Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen in the film, added, "We are all proud (of Robert and Kristen) because this is the first time they've ever acted in something like this. I don't think they've ever won an award (like they ones they won tonight), either. They should be proud of themselves, too."

Fans everywhere cannot wait for New Moon to come out.

Shelby B, 7th from Thoreau Middle School, says, "I am so excited! I can't wait to get into the theatre! I will be in the front row. I can't wait to see Jacob as a werewolf. I've never been able to picture that while reading the book."

"I am super excited! Although, I really want to be able to watch the movie without hearing screaming girls in the theatre. I really want to see which scenes from the book they decided to keep, and which scenes they cut out. Sometimes, they cut out really important parts, and I hope they didn't do that (with New Moon)," Tracy S, 8th, from Skyline, comments.
