Looking forward to summer activities

Laying in the sun, taking advantage of the air conditioning, hangin’ with friends, and chillin’ by the pool eating a popsicle are all common summer past times. Kids, teenagers, and adults look forward to summer. But what for?

There are so many activities to choose from in the summer. August B, 7th, says, “I like to relax, not think about school, soak up the sun, and swim.”

After a long school year filled with routines, summer is the time to relax for most kids.  While some people enjoy being able to lay around not caring what day it is, some have summer hobbies to look forward to.

Some people take a break from sports in the summer, but others enjoy the exercise. Jason V, 7th, says, “I like to play baseball over summer. I also like to go to Cedar Point, go on ‘vacas’, and swim.  I look forward to working on my fitness this summer.”

But is summer the time to get close to the family or catch up with friends? August says, “I like to hang out with friends because my family isn’t that fun.”

August also looks forward to freedom from the dress code, no teachers, no busy schedule, and NO HOMEWORK.  Although most students probably agree with this, not everyone enjoys the same things over summer.

Without school in the way, teenagers are free to do things that fit their personality.  Jason says, “I like going to the pool to get a tan and to scope out the hotties.”  Many boys would agree with what Jason says.

Girls, however, enjoy different things.  Shopping, tanning, boy watching, and hanging out with gal pals are activities that many teenage girls like to do.

Many students go to summer camps to pass time over vacation.  Some people attend Algonquin and YMCA summer camps.  There are also many sports camps organized by the University of Michigan and Concordia.  There are so many options for summer over-night or day camps that you’re sure to find one you’ll enjoy.

Summer is an opportunity to pick up a new sport and be active.  However, electronics always seem to be a huge part of teenagers’ lives.  Although that’s not necessarily a bad thing, you should always make an effort to put down your cell phone, get off your computer, and have some fun in the sun!

So while you’re sitting on the couch this summer, start thinking of some fun things to do to get outdoors and soak up the sun!
