The University of Michigan was established in 1817.  It was built in Detroit as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, about twenty years before the Michigan Territory officially became a state. The university moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 onto 40 acres of what is now known as Central Campus.  Also the university was made for men only until the beginning of the 1900's when women were allowed.  In fact, only men were allowed on the football field until the 1960's when a few women got on the field dressed as men.

"The University of Michigan continues to grow and succeed.  It is a University that has adapted to changes over time including new construction, adding new programs and staying ahead of the game in terms of technology and recruiting," said Valerie P, UofM dance team coach.  In the most recent edition of World University Rankings, the university was ranked 18th among universities worldwide in academics!  With over 460,000 living alumni in 2007 UofM holds the record for the largest number of living alumni in the world!  All according to the US News and World Report.

The University of Michigan isn't just known for academics but also for sports.  The athletic program is known for its success in ice hockey and football.   Michigan Stadium, also known as "The Big House," is one of the largest college football-only stadiums in the world.  The Big House can hold over 110,000 fans.  Lately football has been great with five wins and two losses, and other sports have hope in doing well this year.

Central Campus is huge with many different places to go to.  "I loved how it was easy to get around to many different places on campus.  It was nice that UofM is inside a city. I loved all the different restaurants on campus," said 7th grade teacher Selecman.

UofM is a great college with new development and great classes, UofM is always caught up to this century in technology.  So if you're ever looking for a great college to go to, get good grades and choose UofM!
