The last event of the Vancouver Olympics was a hockey game between Canada and the United States. On February 28, 2010, they played off for a chance to win gold and Canada took that chance, beating the US by one point.

The game, as mentioned before, was between Canada and the United States hockey teams. The United States was being coached by Ron Wilson, a man famous for his coaching of other hockey teams. Canada’s coach was Ken Hitchkock. The well known player Ryan Kessler played for the United States, while Canada had Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews.

The United States was looking to take another victory from Canada, as they previously had beaten them 5-3. Canada, from another perspective, was looking to take back revenge and pull gold on their home turf. The United States didn’t quite make it, although it was close leading into overtime.

Jonathan Toews and Corey Perry had earlier given Canada a 2-0 lead before the US fought back, tying it up with just 24 seconds left in regulation time. That led to the big battle in overtime, as Sidney Crosby, a player for the Pittsburgh Penguins, scored the winning goal for Canada. Mikaela S, an 8th grade student says, “I want to write a letter to Sidney Crosby saying that I hate him.” Although the United States tried, Crosby got a pass from Jarome Iginla, sliding a shot under the US goalie Ryan Miller. This ended the game with a score of 3-2, handing the gold to Canada.

Some people believe that the US lost because of Canada's love for hockey. Canada has a reputation for hockey, and many people in their nation are big supporters for their Olympic team. Jimmy M, an 8th grade student says, “I think that because Canada is known for hockey, I guess we should let it slide.”
