Water polo season improves skills
by KATIE S
March 20, 2010
On February 5th, the Mill Creek water polo team started their season. The coach is Mr. Semple, and he is an 8th grade technology teacher at Mill Creek Middle School. Mr. Semple is the one who set up all the practices. He is also the coach for the Dexter High School women’s and men’s water polo teams.

The season of water polo is only a month long, but you can learn a lot from it. You learn how to hold a water polo ball, you learn how the throw the water polo ball, and you learn how to do the “egg beater” which is a water polo kick so you can stay above the water. Also you learn how the rules work in the game and finally, you learn how to play.

You do a lot of drills. Some drills you do in practice are “killers” in the water. Another drill is when you throw the water polo ball with a partner to get the right motion and the correct way to throw the water polo ball. Some other drills that you do in practice a lot are the UCLA and BR drill.  Madison M. said,
“I think that the drills really helpful and they help with your egg beater. Also you learn more on how to play the game.

When you play water polo, there are six people out on each side playing the game; the other people are cheering on their teammates. If you are new to this sport it may come easy to some and may not come easy to other people, because there is a lot of rules on the way you throw the ball and the way you grab your opponent so you can grab the ball. If you don’t do that you will get a penalty. If you get three penalties you are kicked out of the game.

The team practiced at Dexter High School and the practices were from 3:00-5:00 after school two days a week. It is on Tuesday and Thursday.  Allie S. said, “ I think that it is fun, but it can be hard in some practices.”

If you are thinking about playing water polo, you should try it next year.
