Why do we have homework?

How many hours of homework do you have a night?  Do you dread having homework? Mr. Hoelscher says, “What kids really need is a reasonable balance of homework and free time.  Homework has great value in teaching kids how to manage their time. It also provides 'practice' time that is essential for mastery. Still, kids need to be able to get out and play.  They still need to be kids.” I, on the other hand, do not think that it is right to be having homework for some reasons.

One reason is because we already spend seven hours in school.  Many kids like to do things after school with their friends such as go to Foggy Bottom, a friend's house, or DQ.  Others just like to relax at home on the couch.  I know that when I get home, I want to be able to relax for the night and not have to worry about homework.

Another reason is that many kids are involved in afterschool activities such as football, basketball, track, swimming, etc.  Some practices might run from an hour and a half to three hours. This would give kids not much time to work on homework at home. When I was in dance, I saw many girls sitting out because of how much homework they had.  When it came to the next practice they wouldn't know anything that we learned the practice before, which holds up everyone else.  I don't think that's right to not be able to be involved with the activity you're interested in. Delaney G., 7th, says, “It's hard to get homework done. When you have so much dance and homework at the same time, it's impossible!”

The last reason is because for some kids, it takes them longer to do.  If they were to get too much homework they could end up not going to bed until late at night.  A website called KidsHealth says, “Adolescents need about eight to nine and a half hours of sleep, but many don't get it.”  This could interfere with their learning abilities the next day.  I know that if I don't get enough sleep,  I am usually tired the next day in class which makes it harder for me to focus.

I think that teachers should give us time at the end of class to get some of our homework done. That way, kids would have some time to relax.  It would probably be a lot better for kids that are involved with sports and kids that it takes them awhile.
